OTTAWA -- Canadians overwhelmingly believe Stephen Harper is the best prime minister for the economic times, according to a new poll done exclusively for Canwest News Service and Global National. Pollster Ipsos Reid asked Canadians who would "best be able to manage Canada's economy during these troubling times" and three of five -- or 59% -- named Mr. Harper over a coalition headed by Liberal Leader Stephane Dion. "Canadians know that the Tories should be best able to manage this," said Darrell Bricker, CEO of Ipsos Reid. "What they're waiting for now and been disappointed by is the lack of management, or what they perceive to be a lack of management on this. Ultimately, this is still Harper's to lose." Those results largely mirrored similar polls taken during the election campaign. Mr. Harper and the Conservatives may be thankful for the vote of the confidence, but with a looming recession threatening to throw tens -- even hundreds -- of thousands of Canadians out of work, taking over stewardship of the economy could saddle any leader with potential political trouble. As Mr. Harper himself said during a speech to world leaders in Lima, Peru, last month: "Getting re-elected at this time is a bit like winning a Caribbean vacation in the middle of hurricane season." A majority of respondents in every province but Quebec think Mr. Harper is the right man in the right place at the right time. In Quebec, 41% think Mr. Harper is the best economic leader, while 51% say they believe Mr. Dion and the coalition would be best to lead the economy. Albertans were most enthusiastic, with 74% backing Mr. Harper on the economy. Younger Canadians, those age 18 to 34, were less approving of Harper, with 49% backing him on the economy compared to 40% of young people who backed Mr. Dion and the coalition. There was no difference among men or women on the economy, with 59% of each group supporting Mr. Harper. Ipsos Reid surveyed 1,001 Canadians by telephone on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. The pollster says the results are accurate to within 3.1 percentage points 19 times out of 20.
