East West Petroleum announces acquisition of a new exploration block in Morocco

VANCOUVER, Oct. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Ticker: EW (TSX-V)

East West Petroleum Corp. (the "Company" or "East West") is pleased to announce the Company has acquired an interest in a large prospective exploration block onshore Morocco. The Petroleum Agreement was signed with the Office National des Hydrocarbures et des Mines ("ONHYM") in Rabat, the country's capital city.

The 1997 sq. km. (approx. 500,000 acres) Doukkala Block is situated along the Atlantic coast approximately 125 km. southwest from the city of Casablanca. Under the Petroleum Agreement, East West will partner with ONHYM to explore for oil and gas over an 8 year period. The Company will retain a 75% participation interest in the block and operatorship, with ONHYM retaining a 25% participation interest.

The Company will carry out regional geological studies, seismic acquisition and reprocessing, followed by exploratory drilling. Both conventional and unconventional oil plays have been identified on the acreage. Two wells previously drilled on the Block encountered numerous hydrocarbon shows in the Devonian shale section. The Doukkala Block represents East West's first operated program. The Company is reviewing other opportunities in the country.

The Novafor Rig is currently on the Tarfaya Well A location in preparation to run an injection and frac tests of the oil shale.The test will be monitored with Microseismic to determine fracture pattern. Once the test is complete we will drill Tarfaya Well C and core. We will then start our injection process between the three wells. This should take place at the end of a three weeks.

East West takes Morocco plunge

Toronto-listed East West Petroleum has bought an operating interest in an onshore exploration block in Morocco that contains both conventional and unconventional oil plays, the company said.

East West will assume a 75% stake in the 1997 square-kilometre Doukkala block along Morocco’s coast, about 125 kilometres south-west of Casablanca.

Moroccan state oil company ONHYM will retain the remaining 20%. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Under the agreement, the two companies will explore for oil and gas over an eight-year period, with geological studies, seismic shoots and exploratory drilling on tap.

Two wells were previously drilled on the acreage and encountered “numerous hydrocarbon shows” in the Devonian shale section of the block in depths ranging from 1500 to 3000 metres, East West said in a statement.

The Devonian section of the acreage “is of similar age and geology” to the prolific Marcellus shale in the eastern US, East West advisory board member Wak Kani said.

This will be the first operated project for East West, which is active in Egypt and Canada.

The deal marks East West’s first entry into Morocco, where the company said it is “reviewing other opportunities”. A spokesman was not available to give further details.

New Business Development

East West Petroleum is looking to enter into further agreements with additional companies similar to their current agreements with KEC and which:

* Provides immediate access to acreage which has existing technical data allowing for evaluation to be completed quickly
* Allow East West to target the assets which would have the greatest benefit from the application of its expertise

Towards this goal, East West Petroleum representatives recently returned from India where they met with a number of the major and national energy companies resulting in a number of strategic partnerships coming under review.
